The American musician is best known for power pop hits including I’m on Fire and Girls.

His wife, Jan, confirmed the news of his death in a statement issued from Tulsa’s Church Studio, which is where Twilley recorded several songs.

She said: ‘He peacefully departed this world, surrounded by the love of his life, Jan, and close friends.

‘The loss is immeasurable, and our words can’t capture the depth of our grief.

‘Dwight’s musical prowess touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of many.

We are profoundly thankful for the enduring musical legacy he has bestowed upon us all.

No other information about his cause of death has been shared.

However, his family promised to ‘provide further details’ in ‘the days to come’ as they ‘honour and remember the remarkable life’ of the late star.

Twilley’s last social media post just two days ago said that he was awaiting surgery.

Shortly before that, he wrote on Facebook: ‘I’m not feelin’ that great today… My leg is Very Messed up… Nighty, night, night [sic]’.

Born in Tulsa in 1951, Twilley broke into the music scene alongside his friend, Phil Seymour, who died in 1993).

Banding together, they formed Oister and, several years later, they signed a record deal and made the top 20 hit I’m On Fire at the Church Studio, releasing it under the name, Dwight Twilley Band.

In the late 1970s, both men pursued solo careers and, in 1984, Twilley scored another top 20 tune with Girls.

Throughout their time, Dwight Twilley Band released four albums, including two many years after they disbanded.
