The father of six children who were hospitalised following a horror car crash in Western Australia which killed their mother has said one of this kids is now paraplegic.
Distraught Leighton Fraser said his wife Hannah was in a “better place” after the catastrophic incident in Wongamine, in the state’s Wheatbelt region north east of Perth.
Hannah Louise Fraser, 30, and her children were travelling on Goomalling-Toodyay Rd when their Kia Carnival van crashed with a cement truck just after 6am on Wednesday.
She died at the scene, while her six children – aged between one and 13 years – were rushed to Perth Children’s Hospital, including four of them who were transported by helicopter.
Mr Fraser gave an update on his children’s condition on Monday. He said four were due to be discharged soon.
However five-year-old Bethel and Mariah, 11, have more serious spinal injuries and a long journey awaits them.
Bethel is expected to recover but, Mr Fraser told The West Australian, but Mariah has life changing injuries.
“We’re looking at obviously the loss of the lower legs and loss of use of bowel – that kind of thing – so paraplegic,” he said.
Mr Fraser said his wife as now in the “best place she can be”.
“She’s home with God and that’s what we’re so thankful for.
“(I will bring up the children) to be a reflection of her. To carry the same grace she carried is the main focus.”
He also said he his “heart broke” for the cement truck driver.
The 58-year-old male truck driver was not seriously injured in the crash but was taken to Northam Hospital as a precaution.
WA Police said the crash was a “tragic reminder” of how lives could be changed in an instant from road accidents.
“In addition to the tragic loss of life in this crash, there are six children and the driver of the truck who have all personally experienced a traumatic event and will need ongoing support,” police said in a statement.
“While the circumstances surrounding this crash are still under investigation, it is clear something has gone wrong, and in that split second it has ended in tragedy.
“We urge all motorists to take care on the roads.”
A GoFundMe page started by Mr Fraser’s father has so far raised more than $60,000 for the grieving family.
On Wednesday, Mr Fraser write on social media that he had “no words to describe how devastated I am”.
He posted a tribute to his wife.
“I’m sure I got the chance to tell you just how much your presence in my life made me a better man or just how much you meant to me and I hope that in the years we spent side-by-side my actions told you every day that I love you more than words can describe,” he wrote.
“The thought of you not being here with me is so surreal.
“You’re right here with me and you always will be.”
One friend posted photographs with their own tribute on Facebook, describing Ms Fraser as an “angel”.
“The world lost an angel. To this day I have never met someone who was as humble and such a beautiful soul as you,” they wrote.
