London is full of wonderful places to grab a slice of cake to eat with your tea or coffee, but it’s not always you find a place that will let you have as much cake as you can physically stuff yourself with for an affordable price.
Good news for anyone with a sweet tooth - there is a place in London where you can stuff yourself with all the cake your heart desires. I came across Jack and Beyond, a small and unassuming cake shop in Fulham, South West London, and was pleasantly surprised to see that it had a 4.9 rating with over 300 flattering reviews. As I read through the reviews, two words really grabbed my attention - “bottomless cake”.
I knew I had to investigate this immediately and find out more. I went to Jack and Beyond to see if these claims about an endless supply of cake were real, or if they were just some kind of cruel joke designed to get my hopes up.
Thankfully, when I got there, I found that ‘bottomless cake’ was actually a thing. It was like I’d finally found a place in this world where I truly belonged. When I saw the cakes that were on display, I was determined that I wouldn’t leave until I’d eaten everything they had.
Unfortunately, I was getting way ahead of myself, and the shop assistant knew it. There was no way one person alone could eat all that cake, and he was right. Disappointingly, the best I could manage was two slices.
The way it works is you pay £20 and that buys you 90 minutes to eat as much cake as you possibly can. With each slice of cake priced at £3.95, that means that you’d need to get at least five slices of cake to get your money’s worth - certainly no task for one person.
Going on the shop assistant’s advice, I got myself one slice of Red Velvet cake and one slice of Frosted Victoria Sponge. Both cakes were as fresh and scrumptious as the online reviews said they would be, and that left me curious about what all the other cakes were like.
From Vegan Peanut Butter Chocolate Banana and Cheesecake Crumble to Lemon Cupcakes Double Chocolate Cakes, everything on display looked and sounded delicious.
Beyond just being tasty desserts, they were also works of cake art. The same could be said about their shortbreads and cookies, some designed to resemble early 20th century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
Unfortunately, however, I was only one man with one stomach. I wish I had the willpower to eat more, but decided it would make more sense to live to come back another day and try something different, rather than overdose myself with cake. It might be a good idea to bring a few friends to help out.
Saying that, I was reassured by the shop assistant that I would not be kicked out after an hour and a half, which was great because after eating my two slices of cake I said I was thinking of never leaving.
The bakery will soon be moving out of its Fulham store and to a new address on Battersea High Street.
